Kennis is macht. Verspreide macht zonder focus is nutteloos. In klare taal: de visie en doelstelling van het Slackware Linux Documentation Project is om wereldwijd de primaire bron te worden voor alle Slackware gerelateerde informatie. Zo'n doelstelling legt de lat hoog. Maar toch hebben we er vertrouwen in dat het gerespecteerde Slackware Linux, de oudste nog actief onderhouden distributie van GNU/Linux, de juiste gebruikers gemeenschap heeft om dit doel te bereiken. Je bent hierbij uitgenodigd om toe te treden als partner in deze onderneming.

Wie kan hierbij helpen? Iedereen kan dat doen, van je ome Ed die wat met Slackware rotzooit op zijn oude laptop, tot Linux gurus met ervaring in Linux ontwikkeling. Allemaal zijn ze welkom. Iedereen kan wel iets bijdragen dat waardevol is voor dit project. Een op Wiki gebaseerd documentatieproject staat of valt met de betrokkenheid vanuit de gemeenschap. Je hebt natuurlijk kunnen zien wat de GNU/Linux en Open Source gemeenschappen in het verleden hebben bereikt en nog steeds kunnen bereiken. Wanneer we samenwerken, wordt het potentieel voor succes alleen maar groter.

Dit project is gebaat bij artikelen die ingediend worden die het volledige spectrum van Slackware kennis omvatten. Er is behoeft aan diepgaande technische artikelen over hardware controle, software applicaties, Slackware Linux implementaties in bedrijven als ook gewoon thuis, systeembeheer, etc. Ook zijn verhalen welkom van de alledaagse “Slacker” die onderwerpen bestrijken van simpele HOWTOs tot complexe oplossingen en alternatieven voor veelvoorkomende problemen.

Alle ingediende artikelen zullen, zoals gewoon is bij Wiki-gebaseerde projecten, aan peer review worden onderworpen, wat neerkomt op feedback van de overige SlackDocs leden. Soms zullen correcties nodig zijn, of verduidelijkingen in de tekst, enzovoort. Geen enkel artikel zal onbelangrijk geacht worden. Is het relevant voor Slackware? Zal het iemand anders in staat stellen om dit Operating Systeem beter te benutten? Dan is het de moeite waard. Wat wij hier doen, doen we voor anderen. Wij bouwen hier aan een fundament van kennis dat de toekomst moet weerstaan. Jouw deelname is de specie en de bouwstenen voor dat fundament.

Om deze doelstellingen waar te kunnen maken, is het van belang dat we elkaar met respect benaderen en er een sterke geest van samenwerking heerst in dit samenwerkingsverband. Wij hanteren een eenvoudige set regels. Wees vriendelijk en begripvol in je discussies met anderen. Dit project is er niet voor het individu. Het gaat hier om het kunnen delen (van kennis) binnen de gemeenschap en om het kunnen samenwerken aan een gemeenschappelijk doel. Jouw ego zal geen deel worden van het Slackware Linux Documentation Project. Laat het asjeblieft achter aan de kapstok naast de voordeur voordat je inlogt.

Dat is het contract dat we met elkaar afsluiten en met de toekomst.

Deze Wiki draait op de DokuWiki software. Dit was een keus die door de initiator van het project, Alien BOB gemaakt is. In essentie zijn er twee mogelijkheden wanneer een serieuze Wiki opgezet moet worden: MediaWiki en DokuWiki. Alien BOB heeft uitgebreide ervaring met beide - DokuWiki is de motor van zijn eigen Slackware kennisbank, en hij beheert een op MediaWiki gebaseerde kennisbank voor de IT Helpdesk waarvan hij teamleider is.

De keuze is op DokuWiki gevallen vanwege een aantal redenen: diens eenvoudige syntax maakt het beter geschikt voor het document-gericht schrijven. Dit in tegenstelling tot MediaWiki, dat meer algemeen georienteerd is. Ook is een DokuWiki installatie een onafhankelijk geheel; in een enkele directory en zonder de noodzaak voor een SQL database. Dit maakt dat een DokuWiki installatie gemakkelijk over te brengen is naar een nieuwe server (de intentie is om een “dagelijks snapshot” archief beschikbaar te maken als download wanneer het Wiki fundament compleet is). De DokuWiki kent ook ACL (Access Control Lists ofwel granulaire toegangscontrole). Wij zullen hiermee een vorm van kwaliteitscontrole implementeren wanneer we een goed werkend team van editors hebben verzameld (dwz de mensen die verantwoordelijk gaan worden voor de kwaliteit van de website en diens artikelen terwijl jullie, de auteurs, verantwoordelijk worden voor de feitelijke inhoud van die artikelen).

De basis DokuWiki installatie is inmiddels voorzien van diverse plugins die de syntax mogelijkheden aanzienlijk uitgebreid hebben. Die plugins worden vermeld onder aan de Wiki syntax pagina. Je kunt de link bij deze plugins volgen naar de respectieve websites om daar te weten te komen welke toegevoegde functionaliteit ze bieden voor het schrijven van goede documentatie.

The admins asked (and received permission) from Patrick Volkerding to use these modifications of original Slackware artwork here on the Wiki.

To the left of the page you will find a sidebar with several boxes which can be edited (by the admins). Only the “toolbox” box is part of the wiki's monobook template, and can not be modified. More specifically,modifying the content of that toolbox would make future upgrades a pain.
If you have suggestions about entries which should absolutely be in one of those boxes, let us know (use the discussion page).

Even though this documentation site has a hostname in the slackware.com domain, that does not mean it is a Slackware-controlled or sponsored project. The use of the domain name is a token of approval, rather. Also, the project was bootstrapped by Alien BOB, a Slackware coreteam member.
The content of the Wiki will not be controlled by “higher powers”. The content on any page in this wiki is determined by its author(s) and contributor(s).

The core structure of the Wiki will be maintained by the site admins. That means: namespaces, visual identity, access controls and the like. It also means that the namespaces “slackware:”, “slackdocs:” and “slackbook:” are read-only for everyone except the editor/admin team.

Ideas for changing the core structure of the Wiki can be submitted through our mailing list ( http://lists.alienbase.nl/mailman/listinfo/slackdocs) or by editing the discussion page. The actual content is all up to you! We are open to good ideas for enhancement of the existing structure and content, and will not refuse any article in the “howtos:” section.

[Not implemented yet] Our goal is to give you total creative freedom when writing content for the Wiki. But for the sake of quality assurance, we ask you to co-operate with one of our editors.
He or she may be able to offer suggestions about tags to use in your article so that it gets properly listed in the TOC. We also have tag categories that allow you to indicate your article applies to certain versions of Slackware only. You get the idea? You can also discuss an appropriate namespace to put your article in (consider a namespace as a wiki equivalent of a subdirectory - actually that is how it is implemented in the server's filesystem). The editor's primary role is to advise you on the structure of your article, ensure that it looks good, uses well-formed sentences - essentially that what any book editor would also do for you. You (the author of the article) will remain in control over the technical content! The editor will not enter into discussions about the (technical) content of your article, unless he spotted blatant errors of course. We assume that since you wrote it, you know better what you are talking about than do we…

In order to assist the editor with his work, the Wiki implements a mechanism of “publishing a page”. This means that the creation of a new page, or editing an existing page, will automatically put that page in “Draft” mode. The “Draft” message will be prominently visible on the page. If you are editing an existing page, then the original (approved) page will remain be visible to visitors of our Wiki. Only the registered users of the wiki (i.e. your fellow authors) will be able to see the draft instead of the approved version.
You have to consult one of our editors to get your page revision approved. That action will make it visible to the world.

Whenever other people's content is copied into this Wiki, any license and copyright terms which are applicable to the original content will be respected.
The name of the original author(s) as well as the originating URL have to be mentioned in the footer of your (possibly modified) copy of that content.
